Roadkill was developed during a 14-week semester in a team of 11 students; 5 Artists, 3 Designers, 2 Programmers and 1 Animator (Listed Below). Working in Unity3D with C# we successfully implemented a variety of features including basic racing mechanics, artificial intelligence and power ups. In the sections below I will discuss some of the features that I worked on.

Driving Mechanics

As the core mechanic of our game, smooth driving was the primary focus of development for the first few weeks. Much of the work in this area was pair-programmed whilst we attempted to find a technique that suited the game. The final implementation was inspired by the mechanics in the game Obilteracers, developed by Space Dust Studios.

This short video released by the developers guided us to the design that we required, once this was complete we could better separate the programming tasks and continue our development.

Bezier Spline Tool

Part way through the project we realised that modular track pieces did not suit the style of game that we aimed to create. To help the designers in creating a smooth and easily maintainable track I developed a Bezier spline tool in the Unity Editor which extruded a mesh along the modified curve. This technique allowed tweaks and improvements continually throughout the development process and would drastically reduce the time required to prototype and develop new tracks.

This development later became particularly useful in the driving mechanics of the AI agents, Lap positioning and resetting kart positions.

Menus & HUD Elements

I also implemented a variety of UI Elements, such as the in-game HUD, including setup for multiplayer split-screen, and the setup menus which involved a multiplayer character selection screen, generic race setup and track selection.

Immobile Tanks works on a turn based system where a player competes against an AI agent in a top down tank shooting game. Each player has a limited fuel allowance and only one opportunity to fire on each turn.

The player should modify the tilt angle of the barrel and the power value in order to aim their projectile to hit their opponent, the closer the shot the more damage dealt until the opponent is defeated.

The development of the game was completed in XCode using Objective C and testing was completed on an iPad Mini (2nd Gen).

Some of the core features that were implemented include; Gyroscope Input, Magnetometer Input, Accelerometer Input, Speech Input, Simple Touch Based Controls, Artificial Intelligence and Menus & Settings.

Employment Details

Job Role

My role as a Junior Software Engineer (Placement) at Savantech focused largely on the development of C# applications driven by large SQL server Databases both for client projects and internal developments. I developed several WPF applications, a Windows Service Application and supported and maintaned a large ASP.Net web application. I was often in contact directly with clients throughout development processes and support calls during my employment.

In my final year of university I moved to a part time role, during which most of my work was been focused on internal developments to imporove procedures and efficiency through improved software soloutions. My work in this area is still ongoing after switching back to a full time role and will continue until late August 2017.

Flakey Snakey is a first year university project that slightly redesigns the classic game 'Snake' by causing the snakes to shed half their size when they eat 'mouldy fruit'. The snake is created using a linked list to which I can push and pop peices of the snake into.

The project demonstrates some simple game state mechanics, a basic AI agent, appropriate UI and clean design.

Group Focused Work

Whilst most modules focused on individual work, some had group elements including Advanced Games Development in which I worked with a group of 9 other students from multiple disciplines to produce a working game demo.

Entrepreneurial Skills Award

As part of the introduction to Teesside University we were asked to develop a mobile app idea in small groups. As part of a group of four students I won an award for outstanding entrepreneurial skills for our digital receipt application idea.
